I am a photographer, currently based in Occoquan, Virginia, Home, however, is California's great Central Valley.
Photography is where my artistic-self flourishes. I indulged my photographic compulsions, taking formal courses in digital and darkroom photography at the Monterey Peninsula Junior College where I had the privilege of training with fine art photographer, Patrick Jablonski in the tradition of the West Coast School. While I no longer work in the darkroom, that experience as well as my roots in film photography still greatly influence my work. |
Can I take the picture?
|
I come from a long line of shutterbugs. I first started following my older sister around Yosemite Valley as a kid- mostly so I could get out of the car and run around. But soon, I noticed the camera and started begging to hold it, and to press the shutter like a grown up. I learned the basics of composition and color from those trips.
Today, thanks to my sister who is the consummate collector, I have a collection of antique cameras that go back to my great grandfather. They are beautiful and fascinating objects that were prized and used by my elders. When I hold them, I can feel their hands, and I can imagine them lining up the shot and taking the picture. |
Then there was Ansel.
|
It was in Yosemite where I first saw the work of Ansel Adams. It was a revelation to me, as to so many others before and after me. I was an young teen and soon books about Ansel Adams and small framed prints were my Christmas presents. On trips to Carmel, CA my best friend and I would explore the galleries. It did not take long for me to discover the work of Adam's contemporaries in Group f/64 - Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham.

. . .and Lange
|
The work of Dorothea Lange has also left a lasting impression on me and my work. Photographing people is deeply personal and very brave. While I tend to shy away from photographing people, Lange taught me the power of spontaneity and the gift of unexpected discoveries you find when looking with fresh eyes. To this day, I find my best work comes from the fresh excitement of seeing for the first time.
